Siren Song

Poetry by Gala Muench

siren-song

"The title poem Siren Song walks the line between the conscious and unconscious minds, and Gala Muench entices by balancing images that give and take until "we" traverse the distance:

"One ear to the silence/one heartbeat away from chaos?"

It is precisely Muench's ability to mix real, surreal, and natural images, that gives her poetry so much strength. Siren Song is amplified by photographs taken by Gala's husband Chris Muench. Like cups of water from the same barrel as the poems, the photographs are references to a mythic subtext, from nude to nude, from barn to barn. Muench's stories fit her chosen song. Her voice rings true to place, to the intermountain West,...and so, rings beyond."

"Siren Song documents the most important passages in our lives. An Emergency Medical Technician, Muench has seen more than her share of accidents and tragedies. But her grief is balanced by the joy she finds in the natural world, where dragonflies sketch calligraphy in the air above a pond. Open-hearted, she fights against forgetting, against the forces of our erasure. Tough and gentle, firm yet yielding, Muench's poems offer a world reborn in fresh language, and imagery that's stark yet very much alive. Siren Song is simply a beautiful book, inside and out."

- - Dennis Held -- Betting on the Night

"Gala Muench's poems cut right to the point-blank blue-lane chase straight for the racing heart. Or they take the gravel-'n'-grass, languishing, capillary, scenic route. Either way, Siren Song -- via its idyllic, veristic, organic verses, choruses, and bridges -- gets us there, where we, whether enchanted or saddened, "learn the language of soil," the lyric of land, the music of universe earth. Gala Muench's poetry resounds with the vocal range of an operatic diva. Ten parts Zest and 11 parts Zen, this is one book no serious reveler-in-song and reverer-of-life can afford to live without."

A Time Alone

Written & Illustrated
by Cheri Calvert

A Time AloneThis is a children's story written to encourage fantasy and visualization.

"I sit here amist the tranquility of the mountains and the forests of Northern Idaho.
Our 27 acre homestead is bordered on two sides by Kaniksu National Forest. There are no neighbors witin sight. My husband and I are self-employed, working at home with our two small children. We cut our own wood for heat and raise the majority of our own food."

"However, despite the peaceful secluded life-style, I still find times when I feel a need to get away for A Time Alone. Solitude is definitely a nutrient for me. Solitude creates the space for me to heal, to worship, and to dream."

Vivid visualization techniques are a key factor in the ability to reach our goals and playful daydreaming is a good way to practice this skill.

Not only recognizing, but supporting the benefits of solitude is one of the things Calvert tried to teach her children. Amidst a society that stresses stimulation - pre-school, T.V., computer games, after-school extra-cirricular activities, and more - we need to teach our children the importance of A Time Alone, a time to visualize their personal dreams.

Calvert wrote and illustrated this as an introduction to recognizing this spiritual need for the very young. But, it is also a reminder to us adults, immersed in our busy days, that we all need A Time Alone.

The Garden Song

A True Story About Rape
by Cheri Calvert

garden-song-coverCoeur d’Alene, Idaho is a vacationer’s paradise, attracting an international guest list to its tranquil lake shores. Pink flowering plums promenade along the walkway by City Beach, against a backdrop of still snow capped mountains. On Sunday afternoons, sunbathers are serenaded by the sounds of seagulls competing with strands of live music drifting over from the Rotary Band Shell in the Park.

It resembles a watercolor illustration in a child’s storybook; beautiful, gentle, and safe. But things begin to change in the spring of 2003. An unknown intruder, preying on women living alone, began eroding the trust of this small town. By fall, the list of victims had grown to include women from 28 to 82-years-old, the police still had no one in custody, and the community was feeling edgy.

A series of alarming coincidences push the author into pursuing her own answers, even when it means confronting her worst fears. With amazing compassion, Calvert discovers a world very different than what she had known.

Weaving together the vivid contrasting colors of two lives into a landscape of forgiveness, Calvert writes courageously of her descent into darkness. “Just like a tiny seed needs to remain buried in the dark, cold earth through the winter, sometimes I need to allow myself to go into the darkness before I can sprout new growth and bloom once again.”

Garden metaphors intertwine gently through the tale, like the tendrils of a vine reaching for the sun, as she leads us down pathways that merge innocence with the horrific.
